Changing the User Principal Name in Office 365

admin January 19th, 2013

office 365

This applies to Office 365 instances where you are NOT using ADFS for directory federation.

This DOES work for Directory Synchronisation scenarios and plain old no-AD scenarios.

From any Windows 2008 or Windows 7 (and up) perform the following:

office 365

  1. Connect to Microsoft Online Services by using the Microsoft Online Services Module for Windows PowerShell
  2. Run the following PowerShell cmdlets
    Connect-MsolService
    Set-MsolUserPrincipalName -UserPrincipalName [CurrentUPN] -NewUserPrincipalName [NewUPN]

    e.g.

    Connect-MsolService
    Set-MsolUserPrincipalName -UserPrincipalName alex.pizarro@oldname.com.au -NewUserPrincipal
