
This applies to Office 365 instances where you are NOT using ADFS for directory federation.
This DOES work for Directory Synchronisation scenarios and plain old no-AD scenarios.
From any Windows 2008 or Windows 7 (and up) perform the following:
- Connect to Microsoft Online Services by using the Microsoft Online Services Module for Windows PowerShell
- Run the following PowerShell cmdlets
Connect-MsolService Set-MsolUserPrincipalName -UserPrincipalName [CurrentUPN] -NewUserPrincipalName [NewUPN]
e.g.
Connect-MsolService Set-MsolUserPrincipalName -UserPrincipalName alex.pizarro@oldname.com.au -NewUserPrincipal
